Using maths to clean-up our oceans: This talk will provide a more in-depth look at the content of the Numberphile video: where does river water go? Rivers are the major source of pollution in the oceans and if we are to clean them up, we first need to know where the majority of the pollution is concentrated. By creating a mathematical model for river outflows –- verified by laboratory experiments and fieldwork –- the goal is to be able to predict which areas are most susceptible to pollution from rivers and thus coordinate clean-up operations as effectively as possible.

Dr Tom Crawford will describe his experience of using social media – Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube – to promote maths content, and his many novel approaches to try to improve the image of maths in society. His award-winning website tomrocksmaths.com features two highly successful video series: ‘Equations Stripped’ and ‘I Love Mathematics’, which will be presented and analysed to discover the key to their success. Where does river water go when it enters the ocean?
Tom Crawford, the Naked Mathematician, discusses his doctoral thesis work in which, unusually for a mathematician, he took to the lab and ran experiments which demonstrate the value of maths to the real world and its problems in an area which surprisingly has rarely been studied before.
When a river enters the ocean, does the water spread out evenly in all directions? How do the tides and waves affect its motion? And where should we concentrate our efforts to clean up pollution? By creating a simplified mathematical model of the situation we can try to answer these questions, and then test out the predictions with experiments in the lab. Dr Crawford will explain how this all works, as well as sharing his experience of fieldwork onboard a ship in the Southern Ocean…

The Maths of Sport: The England football team are notoriously bad at penalty kicks and the statistics back it up. Fortunately, there is hope in the form of a recent study which has calculated exactly where you should aim your shot in order to maximize your chances of scoring. I’ll be telling you all about it and you’ll even have the opportunity to try out your new-found knowledge with a live penalty shootout on stage. The Earth is constantly spinning on its axis, which acts to push objects moving in a straight line to the left or right via the Coriolis force. A new study has calculated the effect of this force on a wide variety of sports and the results reveal the ideal location for a world record attempt. We may even try one of our own…

The Millennium Problems: This course will introduce students to some of the most important problems currently faced by mathematicians. It will provide a broad overview of higher level mathematics that goes beyond simply learning the formulas and equations that you are taught at school. The focus will be on the Millennium Problems – the seven greatest unsolved problems in maths at the turn of the century. We will also consider Fermat’s Last Theorem – a 400-year-old maths problem that was finally solved after incredible determination and sacrifice by Oxford mathematician Sir Andrew Wiles.

Engaging with Maths: Tom is a maths tutor at St Hugh’s with a passion for public engagement. His main aim is to make everyone love maths as much as he does, which can mean going to some very extreme lengths to get people interested in the subject (check out tomrocksmaths.com for a range of examples). In this workshop, Tom will discuss some of the techniques that he has used in the past to successfully engage people with a subject that they previously had no interest in. We will cover how to make a topic relevant and relatable to students, how to encourage participation through ‘gamification’ and ways to make numbers accessible.

Producer/Presenter: My role at the Naked Scientists consists of two main parts. Firstly, helping out with the weekly radio show and podcast bringing breaking science news to the general public on BBC Radio 5 Live and ABC Australia and secondly, producing and presenting a new weekly video series entitled ‘Naked Maths’ which aims to bring maths to life with interesting examples, puzzles and activities.
Maths for Money: After studying maths at university you might decide that you want to earn some actual money and as a result enter into the ‘real-world’ of industry. Contrary to popular belief, however, this does not mean that you can’t continue doing maths as part of your role. From modelling the temperature changes in Lewis Hamilton’s tyres to helping the RAF budget for a new kitchen, I will present employees talking about the maths they are doing everyday as part of their role. Plus, I’ll tell you how I’m using my PhD to help to make maths more fun for everyone – videos, interviews and demonstrations included.
