Is your summer in need of some excitement? International travel doesn’t seem very likely, so why not stay in Oxford, and learn how to make online video content with Tom Rocks Maths?
Dr Tom Crawford is looking for two students at Teddy Hall* to work with him over the summer to produce their very own science communication content. The end goal is to produce a series of four videos covering topics from the four divisions of the university: Humanities, Mathematical Physical and Life Sciences, Medical Sciences, and Social Sciences. This means students of ANY subject can apply!
The videos will be hosted on the Outreach pages of the St Edmund Hall website. The specifics of the video content will be decided during the project, though there is likely to be some focus on maths due to this being Tom’s area of expertise.
Students will receive training in video production, script writing and presentation skills, as well as potentially having the opportunity to work with partner organisations such as the BBC, the European Mathematical Society and Cambridge University Press.
The placement will be for a total of 6 weeks (dates are flexible) and will take place in Oxford. Accommodation on the main college site will be provided free of charge for the duration of the programme. No equipment is required (although a laptop and smartphone would be beneficial).
Please see here for examples of work produced by previous interns, including: videos, podcasts, articles, and puzzles. Any new material produced during the placement that is of sufficient quality will also be posted online at tomrocksmaths.com.
If you’re interested, please get in touch with Tom at tomrocksmaths@gmail.com. All applicants are required to submit a short CV and a sample article (approximately 500-700 words) explaining a mathematical concept for a non-specialist audience.
The deadline for applications is the end of 3rd week (11:59pm Sunday 16th May 2021) – have fun!
*NB: funding is provided by St Edmund Hall and therefore is only available to current students (undergraduate or graduate)
