Standing with one foot in each hemisphere at the Middle of the World monument 16 miles North of Quito, Ecuador. The placement of the equatorial line was defined during the French Geodesic Mission in 1736. At the time the Earth was believed to be egg-shaped at the poles, which means the calculations are incorrect by 240 metres. But the monument was built there regardless to honour the expedition. Exact coordinates 0 degrees 00’08’’S, 78 degrees 27’21’’W. #tomrocksmaths #equator #geodesic
