Oxford Mathematics Online Exhibition 2021: Mandelbulb

One of the 3D Mandelbulb renderings from Tom’s recent collaboration with Quark Media has received a commendation in the 2021 Oxford Mathematics Online Exhibition. Here is the entry in full.

The image shows a ‘Mandelbulb’ – a 3D rendering of the Mandelbrot set. The fractal is created using the White-Nylander formula, which uses spherical polar coordinates to define the nth power of a 3-vector. The Mandelbulb shown has the value n=7 and is viewed from above with the origin at the centre of the image. A full explanation of how the fractals are created is provided in the video below.
