Online Talks for Schools with St Edmund Hall

Throughout July, Tom will be running live talks on YouTube – see more and sign up below! (All times given in GMT+1).

Friday 2 July 14:00-15:00 – Maths v Sport

How do you take the perfect penalty? What is the limit of human endurance? Where is the best place to attempt a world record? Maths has all of the answers and I’ll be telling you how to use it to be better at sport (results may vary).

Wednesday July 7th 16:00-17:00 – Million Dollar Equations

The seven greatest unsolved problems in mathematics, each worth a cool $1 million… In this session I’ll introduce each of the puzzles in turn and try to give you a feel for the maths that you’ll need to know if you’re planning to take one of them on.

Thursday July 15th 18:30-19:30 – Using Maths to Clean Our Oceans

Where does river water go when it enters the ocean? Rivers are the major source of pollution in the oceans and if we are to clean them up, we first need to know where the majority of the pollution is concentrated. By creating a mathematical model for river outflows – verified by laboratory experiments and fieldwork – the goal is to be able to predict which areas are most susceptible to pollution from rivers and thus coordinate clean-up operations as effectively as possible.
